Foam fire extinguishers can be used on Class A fires, involving combustible materials like paper and textiles. However, foam extinguishers should be the primary choice for Class B fires, fueled by liquids such as paint or melted plastic. This is why they are regularly found in both commercial and residential environments. These extinguishers are also extremely useful for combatting fires involving furnishings crafted from synthetic polymers like polyester, as these materials can liquefy under extreme heat. It’s important to note that foam extinguishers are not suitable for electrical fires or cooking oil fires.

Foam extinguishers are distinguished by their signal red colour with a cream label. Also just like other extinguisher types, they are available in a chrome finish, crafted from highly polished aluminium. While the chrome-finished extinguishers feature a distinctive design that may be preferable in certain settings, it’s essential to note that, despite meeting safety standards, they lack BS EN3 certification. A foam fire extinguisher suppresses a fire by forming a cohesive blanket of foam over the source of the fuel. This dual-action foam acts as a smothering agent, cutting off the oxygen supply to the fire, while at the same time providing a cooling effect. By sealing the fuel vapours under a layer of foam, it stops the fire from reigniting. This effective combination makes foam extinguishers suitable for tackling Class A and Class B fires involving solids and flammable liquids.

Fire extinguisher foam comprises various synthetic compounds. Although there have been apprehensions regarding the disposal methods of these chemicals, particularly in relation to environmental and water source impacts, it is essential to note that the foam itself is non-toxic and safe when employed appropriately.

Foam fire extinguishers are commonly found in a range of settings, including offices, schools, warehouses, and residential properties. Their versatile effectiveness against both Class A and Class B fires makes them a preferred choice in environments where a variety of fire risks may be present. Additionally, foam extinguishers are often strategically placed in areas at risk from fires fuelled by solids or flammable liquids.
